Captain David Hicks

I have been inspired by one thing I read that really, I mean really impressed me. It has reaffirmed my view that inspirational leadership does exist, somewhere, out there.

Sadly it was not in the Police Force but in the military.

Captain David Hicks was supposed to be evacuated to safety for treatment for shrapnel wounds sustained during action and refused, preferring to stay and fight with his men. He showed the highest standards of leadership and earned genuine respect from those in his command. Sadly his wounds were so severe to be fatal.

He had also written a tribute to one of his men killed the previous day.

I wonder who will write his ?

I don't even know him but have enormous respect already.

We need more leaders like that in law enforcement, worldwide. Anyone can give an order, but, everyone can't lead.

Not at all like most of our leaders. Mention of a weapon on an incident log, and the leader in the communications centre will send a single crewed probationer and not even bother waking the armed response. Most danger they tend to face is a hot teaspoon.

I read this in the paper last week. I have no doubt in my mind that if he had be fortunate enough to survive he would have been humbled by any suggestion to award him honours for galantry as he was just fighting with his men and wanted to help them out.

Long may he be remembered.
